Matrix MLM Plan: Spillover and Completion Bonuses Explained

A matrix plan, sometimes called a forced matrix, limits how many people can sit on each level below a member. In a 3×3 matrix, there are three positions on the first level, nine on the second and twenty-seven on the third — thirty-nine positions in total. The fixed structure is easy to visualise and creates a sense of teamwork, because members above you help fill your positions.

How spillover works

When your first level is full, the next person you sponsor is placed in the first free position further down your matrix. Likewise, members sponsored by people above you may be placed in your matrix. Spillover is the main attraction of matrix plans: your matrix can fill even if you personally recruit only a few people.

Level commissions

Members earn a fixed amount or a percentage as positions on each level are filled by active, product-buying members. Deeper levels may pay smaller percentages but have more positions.

Completion bonus

When the whole matrix is filled, the member may earn a completion bonus. Many plans then offer re-entry into a new matrix, either automatically or by purchase, so the cycle can repeat.

Choosing the size

  • Small matrices such as 2×2 complete quickly and give early wins, but pay few levels.
  • Larger matrices such as 3×5 or 5×7 take longer to fill but pay more levels.

The right size depends on your product pricing, how often customers buy and your payout budget.

Placement rules

Software can fill positions top-down and left-to-right, prefer the sponsor's own leg, or follow other rules. Members should understand where new people will be placed.

Design for sustainability

Matrices fill fast at the start and slow down as growth slows. Simulate how the matrix fills under realistic growth to check how long members wait for income and whether the payout ratio stays healthy. Tie commissions to genuine product purchases rather than joining fees.
