Every app project faces the same early question: build one cross-platform app, or separate native apps for Android and iOS? A few years ago cross-platform apps often felt slow or awkward. Today, Flutter has made the cross-platform route a serious, often superior, option for most business apps. But native development still has its place.
Why Flutter works for most business apps
- One codebase for Android and iOS. Features ship on both platforms together instead of one lagging behind.
- Lower cost. You build and maintain one app instead of two, which typically saves a large part of the budget over the app's life.
- Smooth performance for the screens most business apps need: lists, forms, dashboards, maps, payments and media.
- Consistent design. Your brand looks the same on every device.
- Fast iteration. Developers see changes instantly while building, which speeds up development and fixes.
When native development is worth it
- Heavy use of device hardware, such as specialised Bluetooth peripherals, advanced camera processing or sensors.
- Apps that must feel exactly like each platform's own design language.
- Graphics-intensive apps and games.
- Deep integration with platform-specific services and background processing.
- Teams that already have strong native developers for each platform.
Performance in practice
For typical business apps — e-commerce, booking, retailer, member, field-staff and service apps — users cannot tell a well-built Flutter app from a native one. Performance problems usually come from poor design, heavy images or slow APIs rather than the framework.
Questions to ask before deciding
- Do we need both Android and iOS from day one, or can we start with Android?
- What is our budget for maintenance, not just the first build?
- Which device features are essential, and are they well supported in Flutter?
- Who will maintain the app in two years?
The backend matters more
Whatever you choose for the app, the backend API and admin panel usually account for a large share of the work. A clean, well-documented API makes it easy to change front-end technology later if you ever need to.
Our usual recommendation
For e-commerce, bookings, retailer apps, member apps, field staff and service management, Flutter is usually the best value. We recommend native development only when a specific requirement demands it, and we explain why.
