A compensation plan decides how members of a direct selling business earn money. It shapes how teams grow, what behaviour is rewarded, how much of each sale is paid out and how easy the business is to explain to a new member. Choosing the right structure is one of the most important decisions a direct selling company makes, and the software must calculate it exactly. Here is a plain-language tour of the main plan types.
Binary
Each member has two legs, left and right. When business volume on both sides matches, the member earns a pair (matching) bonus. The binary plan is simple to explain and encourages teamwork, because a sponsor's placements help the downline. To stay sustainable it needs daily or weekly caps and clear carry-forward rules. Matrix
A matrix has a fixed width and depth, such as three wide and three deep. Once a level is full, new members spill over to the next free position below, so recruiting by the upline helps fill the downline. Members earn level commissions and often a completion bonus. See matrix MLM software.
Unilevel
Everyone you personally sponsor sits on your first level, with no width limit. Commission is paid on purchases at each level down to a fixed depth. Unilevel is simple, flexible and suits companies with consumable products that customers reorder. See unilevel MLM software.
Board (cycler)
Members fill small boards. When a board is full, the top member cycles out with a payout and the board splits into two. Board plans need careful design, because they can depend heavily on new joiners. See board MLM software.
Generation
Commission is paid by rank-based generations rather than fixed levels. A generation ends where a downline member reaches your rank, which rewards leaders who develop other leaders. See generation plan software.
Hybrid
Two structures combined on one member ID — for example binary pair income for team building plus unilevel income on repeat purchases. Hybrids are flexible but must stay understandable. See hybrid MLM software.
Which plan is best?
The best plan rewards genuine product sales, is easy for members to understand in a few minutes, pays out a sustainable share of revenue and fits how your products are bought — one-time or repeatedly. Before launch, simulate the plan on realistic growth scenarios to check the payout ratio.
A note on the law
In India, the Consumer Protection (Direct Selling) Rules, 2021 allow direct selling of genuine products and ban pyramid and money-circulation schemes. The plan structure alone does not make a business legal or illegal — what matters is whether income comes from real sales to real customers. Take legal advice on your plan before launch.
