Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) is an interoperable bill payment network in India, operated by NPCI Bharat BillPay. Before BBPS, each payment channel had to integrate separately with each biller, and customers often could not get a reliable receipt. BBPS connects billers — electricity boards, gas companies, lenders, insurers, broadband providers, municipal bodies and many more — with payment channels such as banking apps, websites and retail agents through a common network.
How a BBPS payment works
- The customer provides their consumer number, account number or other identifier to an app or agent.
- The bill is fetched from the biller, returning the customer's name, amount due and due date.
- The customer confirms the details and pays.
- The payment is routed to the biller through the network.
- A BBPS transaction reference is generated and shared with the customer.
Why bill fetch matters
Bill fetch shows the exact amount and the customer's name before payment, so wrong account numbers and wrong amounts are caught early. Most billers support fetch; a few accept payment of an entered amount.
Benefits for customers
- One place to pay many different bills
- Standardised receipts and references
- A defined complaint process for payment disputes
Benefits for businesses
- One integration for a very wide range of billers
- Regular customer visits for retailers
- Commission on each payment
Common categories
Electricity, water, piped gas and LPG cylinder booking, broadband, landline, postpaid mobile, DTH, cable TV, FASTag, loan repayment, insurance premiums, municipal taxes, education fees and more.
Disputes
If a payment does not reflect with the biller, the BBPS reference is used to raise a complaint through the provider. Keeping references organised makes dispute handling quick.
With a BBPS API, your app or counter can offer all these bills through one integration. See our BBPS bill payment API.
